Book Blitz: Extraordinary Love

I get to join this lovely blitz, hosted by Bewitching Book Tours, with a guest blog that I'm so very excited about! So let's get talking!

Micah Persell:

When Of Eternal Life got accepted for publication, it was a full-sized novel of just over 78,000 words. The publisher that bought it was putting out category-length romances, which are around the 50,000 word mark. Let me tell you, there were some tears shed as my editor helped me sheer off over 20,000 words from my “baby.” Here’s one of the scenes that I always loved but that hit the chopping room floor:

Oh, lord. “McDonald’s?” he asked, hoping he’d misunderstood. She set her chin determinedly and defied him to naysay with her eyes. Apparently, they were still not talking.

Eli hated McDonald’s, but he had to admire her stubbornness. “Okay, McDonald’s it is.” Last time I let her choose.

Just when he pulled into the parking lot, he noticed a truck with similar coloring to his own.

He pulled into the spot beside it, thanking his luck that their location by the dumpster shielded them from the road. He hopped from the truck and plucked a screwdriver from the toolbox that had been sliding around the truck bed. Eli knelt behind the bumper to loosen the license plate’s screws.

The door screeched in protest as Abilene threw it open and stomped to his side. “What are you doing?”

“Switching license plates with this truck.”

She gave an appalled gasp, and proceeded to look around them guiltily in a way that would only draw unwanted attention.

“Abilene, go sit in the truck.”

“This is illegal,” she hissed at him.

He looked at her and raised his eyebrows. She seemed to realize the absurdity of what she’d just said, and sniffed as she straightened her shoulders.

She watched his progress in disgust one moment longer before stomping back to the truck, flopping herself gracelessly into the seat, and slamming the door behind her.

He finished the switch quickly and returned to the cab. As he pulled up to the drive-thru menu, he asked her, “What do you want?”

She glared at him. “I can order for myself, thank you.” Then she promptly leaned across him to stick her head out the driver’s window.

Eli froze as soon as her close proximity registered. Her body spoke to his. The warmth of her shoulder pressed into his chest, and her hand was so hot it branded him where it propped up her weight on his thigh. He breathed in and closed his eyes as her scent inundated him. God, she smelled good. He didn’t realize he was leaning in to bury his nose in her hair until she elbowed him solidly in the stomach, bringing him back to his senses. He oofed just as the speaker squawked and someone asked for her order.

She pinned him to the spot with a stern look and leaned out the window again. “Yes, I’ll have a Big Mac, a quarter pounder with cheese, large fry, strawberry shake, and a Diet Coke.” She paused. “Oh! And an apple pie.”

He stared at her with wide eyes. She settled back into her own seat happily, a look of anticipation on her angelic features. She finally noticed his stunned look.

“Holy God, woman.”

Her look grew sheepish. “McDonald’s is my favorite.”

The speaker squawked again. “Will that be all?”

He turned to the window. “Um, make that two.”

Silence. Finally, “Of everything?”

“That a problem?”

“Uh, no, sir. Pull up to the second window.”

Eli eyed Abilene in disbelief again as he pulled around to the side of the building. Where she put all of that food if this was how she usually ate he had no idea, but damn if it didn’t do her good.

Thank you to Micah Persell, our touring author, for joining me here with her words.
