The Girl Who Came Back to Life

by Craig Staufenberg

When you die, your spirit wakes in the north, in the City of the Dead. There, you wander the cold until one of your living loved ones finds you, says "Goodbye," and Sends you to the next world. After her parents die, 12-year-old Sophie refuses to release their spirits. Instead, she resolves to travel to the City of the Dead to bring her mother and father’s spirits back home with her. Taking the long pilgrimage north with her gruff & distant grandmother—by train, by foot, by boat; over ruined mountains and plains and oceans—Sophie struggles to return what death stole from her. Yet the journey offers her many hard, unexpected lessons—what to hold on to, when to let go, and who she must truly bring back to life.

My thoughts:
This is such a cute book! I thought it would be when I got the first email and I'm so glad I picked it up! I honestly cannot stop smiling right now, which is probably annoying anyone around me...Oh well.

Sophie is a very cute and believable young character who is quite relateable. I like how she thinks. I also like how Craig describes her. It is in third person, but I feel so close to Sophie, like a third-slash-first person pov. Does that even make sense? Whoops.

I really really like the style of this story. It is very easy-going and enjoyable to read. I think I might start reading a lot more middle grade books. Yet, even with the story being easy to read, it is very descriptive and has a broad and enticing range of vocabulary. It keeps the story interesting.

This plot. Why are all these plots so good? I have no idea, but this is also on the list. I love the idea of the journey to bring her parents back. I also like how the dead don't just disappear; they go to the City of the Dead, which has a location. And that there are lessons learned, as well.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I hope Craig writes more that I can read. If he hasn't already...I must check.
